ASX-listed financial technology business IRESS is set to become the first Australian company to offer paid leave for employees with children starting primary school.

The benefit, believed to be the first of its kind, provides parents of children entering kindergarten with up to eight and a half additional days off at full pay. The technology company employs about 1800 people globally. Around half of those are based in Australia, with offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“Our people told us that when their children started primary school it was both an exciting and stressful time for the whole family,” said Andrew Walsh, CEO of IRESS. “We realised we could be doing more to provide financial and emotional support at this key family milestone.”

“Feedback from our people consistently shows that family-friendly benefits are amongst the most highly valued by our people and so we wanted to provide great benefits that would make a genuine difference to people’s daily lives. As far as we’re aware, we’re the only company offering such a generous amount of leave at full pay to help parents out at this crucial time.”

The leave is part of a comprehensive benefits package IRESS offers parents. This includes paid parental leave for up to 26 weeks for primary carers and up to six weeks’ leave for secondary carers. In addition, employees returning from primary parental leave are able to work part-time for up to four weeks while receiving full-time pay to assist with the transition back to work.

Cindy Blay, a senior technology delivery leader based in Melbourne, said she was looking forward to taking advantage of the benefit to help with getting her son Kieran off to school.

“It means a lot to know that IRESS is supporting me to be there for Kieran when he starts school. Being able to take him to and from school, as well as have the time and space for those special first-week conversations - about his classroom, teacher and new friends - is absolutely fantastic. It makes me feel like I’m giving him the best start to his education because IRESS is supporting me both at work and at home.”
